As the Assistant Radiation/Laser Safety Officer, you will:
Plan, develop, review, prioritize, maintain, evaluate, direct, and implement UNL’s institutional laser safety program, specific broad scope license, and x-ray registrations by preparing permit applications and renewals, developing, implementing, and maintaining associated laser and radiation protection programs and procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations.
Conduct associated duties such as but not limited to shielding design reviews, radiation dose evaluations and measurements, laser beam and non-beam hazards and mitigation strategies, safety/security policies/procedures/protocols.
Create and maintain records associated with the laser safety program, and recommend laser protection equipment.
Conduct and oversee audits/inspections of campus radiation safety and laser operations.
Create, review, and approve laser and radiation safety standard operating procedures.
Conduct hazard evaluation of laser and radiation work areas, including the establishment of Nominal Hazard Zones (NHZ), Radiation Areas, and others.
Investigate injuries and illnesses and near-miss incidents associated with radioactive material, radiation-producing devices, and laser use; develop and implement corrective actions as needed; and conduct similar investigations related to general laboratory safety in assigned areas.
Develop, implement, and maintain institutional laser safety and radiation safety training programs.
Advise Principal Investigators in the development and implementation of effective site-specific safety training for users and maintain related training records.
Advise and assist in the training of visiting scientists using UNL facilities for radioactive material, radiation-producing devices, and laser systems.
Serve as the EHS representative and voting member on specific license/x-ray subcommittees of the Campus (Faculty) Radiation Safety Committee, voting as the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) on the Campus (faculty) Laser Safety Committee (LSC), and the alternate RSO for the full Radiation Safety Committee.
Assist Principal Investigators to prepare radiation safety and laser registration and supporting documents for review by the x-ray subcommittee, LSC, and RSC.
Prepare and revise policies and procedures for internal and campus operations.
Assist the RSO by providing leadership to the supporting staff and overseeing radiation safety program functions in the absence of the RSO.
Collaborate with Principal Investigators, senior staff and laboratory managers to implement the general laboratory safety program and corrective actions to minimize laboratory hazards.
What you bring to the position (minimum qualifications):
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education/experience in health physics, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, toxicology, industrial hygiene, engineering, or similar science or combination of education and/or experience as a Radiation Safety Offer or a Laser Safety Officer in a research setting.
1+ year experience in applied health physics or implementing laser safety practices and principles consistent with ANSI Z136 and other regulations and standards.
Knowledge of principles, practices, and regulations pertinent to x-ray producing devices.
General knowledge of broadscope license requirements for sealed sources, gauges, and open-source material, and lasers and laser systems.
Knowledge of ANSI laser safety standards.
Ability to plan, design, and implement radiation and laser protection plans and compliance management plans and procedures.
Leadership, organizational, and communication (oral and written) skills.
Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities.
Ability to formulate and document individualized and complex reports regarding unique operations.
Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirement.
Criminal history background check and driving record review will be completed.
