The EH&S Research Safety Health Physics group is seeking an exceptional Health Physicist 3 to join our team. You will work independently to plan, design, manage, and evaluate technical and operational functions of our research radiation safety programs, laser safety program and other non-ionizing radiation safety hazards. In this role, you will:
Serve as a technical subject matter expert (SME), providing functional direction and training in the overall application of radiation safety programs.
Advise researchers and experimenters on radiation safety, laser safety and other non-ionizing radiation safety issues and controls on new or continuing research projects by maintaining field presence in support of radiation protection programs, performing calculations, and assisting researchers, engineers, and physicists in avoiding or minimizing radiation exposure and equipment damage.
Provide oversight for safe and effective conduct of facility operation and radiological and laser activities in assigned research or medical facilities; and/or initiating and overseeing corrective actions and preventive measures for compliance violations.
Manage, plan, evaluate and design dosimetry and shielding program specifications and present recommendations of shielding layout and dosimetry program for conformance.
Develop new techniques, methods, and computer code capabilities to expand and optimize shielding design capabilities.
Conduct comprehensive, independent compliance assurance reviews of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation safety programs. Develop and implement safety policies and procedures related to radiation protection regulations and non-ionizing radiation guidelines.
Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize radiation and laser hazards, as well as other non-ionizing radiation hazards.
Provide instructions and conduct research seminars on radiation safety, laser safety and physics to staff and academic audience. May perform research and development and publish papers in refereed journals.
Provide training and coaching to students, technicians, and health physicists.
May lead a team responsible for developing and implementing radiation safety, laser safety and other non-ionizing radiation safety programs.
Additionally, you will:
Serve as the SME for the Non-Ionizing Radiation Safety Program.
Advise laser users on laser safety issues and controls.
Provide technical knowledge on new and continuing laser use.
Assist with Non-Ionizing Radiation Safety Program development.
Conduct comprehensive, independent compliance assurance reviews of the laser safety program, as well as other non-ionizing radiation facets.
Develop and implement safety policies and procedures related to non-ionizing radiation safety.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in health physics, radiation physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, or related field. Advanced degree and/or certification(s) or experience may be required for some programs. Eight years of applicable experience in health physics and program management performing duties similar to those listed above and or a combination of education and relevant experience.
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
Advanced level experience designing and managing technical and operational functions of radiation safety and laser safety programs.
Expert level knowledge in radiological hazard identification, safety analysis, and dose, shielding, and activation calculation.
In-depth knowledge of radiation protection regulations at federal, state and local levels.
Ability to conduct radiation safety risk assessment, mitigation, and crisis management.
Extensive experience in the design, development, and optimization of radiation shielding, safety devices, and radiation machines.
Research and development skills to improve the methods and programs.
Demonstrated experience in training and coaching technical staff and providing safety training to personnel.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences and to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
Additionally, you will also bring:
In-depth knowledge on laser safety guidelines as written in ANSI Z136.1.

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California non-commercial class driver license. Ability to drive day and night.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
May be exposed to radioactive materials and/or ionizing radiation, Class IIIB or IV lasers, magnetic or electromagnetic fields, and lead.
May be exposed to biohazards (urine, blood, feces) while working with patients and/or animals in ER's, OR's or IR's (interventional radiology). Must gown up for sterile environments.
May require travel to off campus locations.
