The Core Technology Platforms (CTP) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) are multidisciplinary, centrally organized research facilities comprised of 12 core laboratories. We provide hundreds of research equipment, user training, and research support to NYU Abu Dhabi's academic community and collaborators. For more information, please refer to the CTP website.
The CTP seeks to appoint a Research Instrumentation Scientist – Photonics and Telecommunications (Ph.D.) or a Research Instrumentation Specialist – Photonics and Telecommunications (MSc).
Responsibilities:
Creating experimentation setups using Optical and RF components (Modulators, Amplifiers, Detectors, etc.).
Developing optical and/or wireless testbeds and communication system prototypes (including optics, electronics, software, firmware, and mechanical sub-assemblies).
Automating data acquisition processes by combining multiple instruments and developing software to control them.
Designing custom-made experimentation components and systems.
Planning, scheduling, and executing measurement campaigns, as well as supporting the users with data analysis.
Manage, maintain, and upgrade the current equipment.
Purchasing new equipment, accessories, spare parts, and consumables.
Develop and maintain instructional materials, standard operating procedures, Risk Assessments, and any other EHS-required documentation for the safe operation of the laboratory.
Participate and collaborate with researchers and scientists in the relevant fields.
Required skills and experience:
The candidate will work with researchers and faculty to assist them in setting up and running experiments in the relevant CTP.
Should be able to demonstrate strong knowledge and experience with research-level laboratory instrumentation and must have strong background and experience in developing optical and/or wireless testbeds and communication system prototypes (including optics, electronics, software, firmware, and mechanical sub-assemblies).
Should demonstrate strong hands-on experience working with optical and RF equipment and components such as oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, optical powermeter, optical spectrum analyzer, beamshape analyzer, etc.
Should demonstrate strong theoretical background and hands-on experience in Signal processing, Optical and RF communication, Data acquisition, Data transmission formats, Optical signal propagation, FDTD simulations, integrated optics, free-space optical communication (FSO), visible light communication, and fiber optic communication.
Demonstrate excellent programing skills, at least in one of the following programming environments: Labview, Matlab, C, or Python.
Will be expected to work with different groups of researchers manage the shared facilites.
The candidate must be willing to be trained on additional equipment as required and operate them, and may be directed to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this job description.
Required education:
For the Research Instrumentation Scientist position, applicants must have a PhD degree in Telecommunications, Electronics, Photonics, or relevant field
For the Research Instrumentation Specialist position, applicants must have a MSc degree in Telecommunications, Electronics, Photonics, or relevant field or relevant field.
Preferred experience:
Three years of relevant experience preferably in higher education laboratories focusing on operating optical and Telecommunications equipment.
Experience conducting scientific research that includes methods and technologies associated with analytical or relevant fields with a proven record of scientific publications.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, solid written, verbal and presentation skills, and experience.
Good judgment skills and the ability to solve problems.
