Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Advanced Light Source Division has an opening for a User Safety Specialist to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will provide a range of technical safety support for ALS users and staff in many subject matter areas including, but not limited to: biological safety, chemical safety, laser safety, industrial safety, etc. You will apply technical subject matter support to ensure the ALS User operations meet applicable health and safety requirements and work is performed safely. You will manage the ALS User Biology Lab and assist users with accessing and using the lab. Interface with users on a daily basis during operations to ensure work authorizations and approvals for research experiments are complete. You will run safety and experiment reports for the safety team and User Office. You will apply EHS principles and exercise sound judgment and initiative within defined procedures and practices to advise key managers, users, and staff.
The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 14,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. This position will be filled at a Level 2 or 3 depending on the skills, knowledge, and experience of the candidate.
What You Will Do:
- Ensure Experiment Safety Assessment Forms (ESAF) are complete prior to experimental runs, collecting electronic signatures as needed. Ensure that close out documentation is in place at the end of each experimental run.
- Develop and maintain a working relationship with users and staff including, but not limited to, scientists, building managers, technical staff and engineers, in both individual and group settings.
- Infuse a customer service-oriented philosophy during all interactions within LBNL.
- Schedule and assist with experimental safety inspections.
- Field general safety issues, concerns and requests from ALS users and assist ALS safety staff with general support requests.
- Interface with the ALS User Office on general user support issues.
- Review and approve user proposals and ESAF submissions for biological samples to ensure proper control measures, approvals and authorizations are in place. Consult with the ALS safety manager and the LBNL Biosafety Office for complex samples as needed.
- Manage the ALS User Biology Lab, including coordination of maintenance and repairs, providing user orientation training, stocking supplies and coordinating biological waste pick ups.
- Stay abreast of current Berkeley Lab and EHS Program Health and Safety Policies.
- Perform the biological safety portion of the annual beamline safety inspections according to the established schedule.
- Assist the ALS safety manager with development and maintenance of the Work Planning and Control activities for biology work.
- Under general supervision of the ALS safety manager, ensure all biological samples and biological work comply with applicable permits and approvals.
- Serve as a back-up to the ALS Chemical Safety Specialist as needed, for chemical safety support for users. This includes coordinating and retrieving gases, chemicals and equipment for users as needed.
- Assist with maintaining the ALS Chemical Inventory, including physical inventory and data entry.
- General administrative support, including ordering chemicals through the LBNL procurement system.
- Calibration of industrial hygiene instrumentation, including meters, sensors, monitors, etc.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
- In addition to the level 2 responsibilities, the level 3 will perform the responsibilities stated in this Biosafety support section with minimal oversight and day to day instruction.
What is Required:
- BA/BS and 5 years (5-7 years for Level 3) of relevant industrial hygiene and safety experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and verbal communications skills to interact with visiting and staff scientists, engineers and other personnel. Essential skills include the proven ability to build a consensus that supports desired actions.
- Experience in biosafety and biological hazards
- Demonstrated experience in biosafety, industrial hygiene, laboratory safety, or a related field with knowledge and understanding of OSHA, DOE, CDC, NIH, and/or other related safety requirements/regulations.
- Ability to apply knowledge to moderately difficult work assignments and to exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate actions.
- Proficiency with standard business software, including word processing, presentation software, and spreadsheets.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience in DOE user facilities, DOE laboratories or a biology laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of existing LBNL and/or ALS safety processes.
- Industrial hygiene experience with instrumentation calibration, including air monitors, gas sensors, etc.

- H50.2 - Occupational Safety Specialist 2 - Requires 5 years of experience. This position is expected to pay $7,805 - $9,756/month, which fits within the full salary range of $7,805 -$13,170/month for the Occupational Safety Specialist 2.
- H50.3 - Occupational Safety Specialist 3 - Requires 5-7 years of experience. This position is expected to pay $9,280 - $11,599/month, which fits within the full salary range of $9,280-$15,660/month for the Occupational Safety Specialist 3.
- Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
