Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) supports safety and environmental responsibilities at OHSU. EHS programs focus on occupant and facility safety, regulatory compliance, and sustainable practices. The team of safety professionals works to prevent accidents and injuries, minimize exposures to hazardous conditions and substances, reduce the institutional impact on the environment, provide regulatory compliance expertise, and promote an integrated culture of safety. Services include policy management; training, education and outreach; hazardous waste collection; regulatory consultation; and establishing tools and services that allow the organization to recognize and address health and safety hazards. The programs are organized under general health and safety, fire safety, hazardous waste, biological safety, chemical safety, environmental protection, and radiation safety.
Function/Duties of Position
The person in this position manages the Healthcare Laser Safety Program at OHSU. This includes: laser safety and function training, evaluating laser hazards and necessary safety measures, auditing systems, areas and practices related to lasers, reviewing, establishing and enforcing policies and procedures and acting as an informational resource person regarding lasers and laser safety. The HLSO collaborates with designated clinical unit personnel regarding aspects of laser use and safety, and with Clinical Technology Services, and has experience with applications in surgery and various clinic settings. The LSO serves on the OHSU Laser Safety Committee, which establishes guidelines and processes to ensure the safe use of lasers, and reviews requests for practitioner laser privileges. The HLSO is familiar with and guided by national standards and regulations, including ANSI Z136.3.
Bachelors of Science in Biology, Microbiology, Physics or related field
5 years’ experience related to the specialty
2 years’ progressive leadership or supervisory experience
Working knowledge of a wide variety of lasers
Ability to work with staff and mangers in a wide variety of environments including clinics and operating rooms
Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, laser support staff and mangers
Ability to create and present effective teaching programs
Familiarity with Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Word
Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
Master’s Degree in health related field
Completion of an MLSO training course
Experience as a Medical Laser Safety Officer
Experience in an Academic Medical Center
Experience working in an OR unit
Extensive knowledge of ANSI Z136.3 Standards
Specific knowledge of OHSU laser policies
Familiarity with Epic documentation and reports
