USCâs Division of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is seeking a Radiation Safety Specialist to join its outstanding team.Â EH&S is responsible for providing a safe and environmentally sound work and learning environment for our students, employees, and surrounding communities. To support the academic, research, and administrative activities of the university, we control
liability by anticipating risk, and evaluating and continuously developing new safety procedures and programs. The Radiation Safety Specialist provides broad-based expertise to University clients in areas related to radiation safety.Â
Job Accountabilities for this role include:
Assists in the development and implementation of safety program(s) that meet University and regulatory requirements. Â In coordination with others, establishes, documents, and communicates standards, guidelines and procedures, including creating educational and training materials, such as fact sheets, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and manuals as needed.
Assesses existing program(s) for adequacy and regulatory compliance and recommends enhancements or modifications, as required.Â Maintains current knowledge of existing and pending legislation relating to safety and health.Â Ensures that program design(s) reflect the most recent standards and regulations.
Conducts routine laboratory safety inspections of facilities to ensure lab occupant attire/activities and lab equipment/infrastructure are in compliance with EH&S standards and regulations.Â Generates reports that accurately document the results of the inspection.Â Recommends corrective action(s) as needed.Â Follows-up until deficiencies are corrected.
Responds to emergency calls or incidents and ensures that proper safety methods and procedures are followed.Â Prepare incident investigation reports as requested or required.
Assists clients in planning and implementing tailored safety programs, e.g. at the Molecular Imaging Center. Works with PIs to ensure standard operating procedures are established and communicated in training.Â
Conducts initial and on-going radiation safety training for users of radioactive materials and/or radiation-producing machines.Â This includes working with the academic department instructional laboratory managers and coordinators as needed to ensure all instructional laboratories are operated in a safe manner.
Assists in maintaining program-specific statistical records, meeting minutes, and administrative paperwork.Â Prepares reports as requested or required.
Liaises with regulatory agencies, professional organizations and other university partners as requested or required.
Assists with shipping, receipt, storage and inventory control of radioactive materials. Ensures PIs update EH&S on-line database, radioisotope use and inventories, etc., in a timely manner per university policies and procedures.
Assists in instrument calibrations, X-ray machine calibrations, laser safety program related needs.
Assists in reviewing protocols involving the use of radioactive materials and/or radiation-producing machines.
Assists with the decommissioning of lab spaces, removal of hazardous waste and other safety program needs as requested.
Minimum Education:Â Bachelorâs degree in Health Physics, or related sciences
Minimum Work Experience: 1 year
Preferred Education:Â Related Graduate Study
Preferred Work Experience: 2 years
