The Director works with the Vice Provost for Researchat Vanderbilt University and is a key manager responsible for supporting theVice Provost in overseeing research operations andadministration. The position oversees, in conjunction with the ViceProvost, research administration across campus centers and units and enhancingthe research experience for research professionals. The positioninteracts with faculty, staff, and external entities on a regular basis.
The Director coordinates with other VanderbiltUniversity offices to lead research compliance and support financial planningfor the Office of the Vice Provost for Research.
The role of the office has been expanded from its pastdefinition based on faculty feedback. In addition to overseeing theuniversity's research portfolio, the Vice Provost for Research also overseesimplementation of the university's new future vision and trans-institutionalstrategies and works closely with the Provost, academic Deans, the ViceProvosts, and the faculty at large to advance the quality of the research andscholarship university-wide. Our plans include developing strategiesto enhance extramural support for research and advanced studies from allsources – corporate, foundation, federal, and philanthropic, advancing acohesive and vibrant international research agenda, and seeking keypartnerships around shared priorities research. The Vice Provostworks with the Vanderbilt University Research Council in advocating for theresearch and scholarship missions of all disciplines at Vanderbilt.
This position has supervisory responsibility overdesignated staff; the position reports functionally and administratively to theVice Provost for Research.
Oversees research center and institute administration
Oversees research compliance functions
Coordinates with the Director of Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA) and the Director of Research Administration Systems and Reporting to ensure business continuity
Suggests and develops model agreements for facilitating industry sponsored agreements
Monitors developments in federal regulatory requirements and coordinates Vanderbilt response
Continues to improve and streamline Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center research collaborations
Directs administration of trans-institutional research centers and institutes
Establishes uniform administrative processes across research centers and institutes
Oversees research administration staffing, development, and training for research centers and institutes
Provides research center and institute budget planning
Performs as a leader in research compliance
Maintains expertise in regulatory compliance
Improves support for chemical, lab, and laser safety university-wide
Oversees Vanderbilt's plan to reinstate our non-possessing facility clearance status
Serves as the Facility Security Officer
Coordinates with other VU offices:
Provides business continuity support within OVPR by working closely with the Director of SPA and the Director of Research Administration Systems and Reporting
Works with OCGA on oversight of Core Ordering & Reporting Enterprise System (CORES) including annual rate setting
Coordinates with OCGA on expenditure reporting to external organizations (Higher Education Research and Development Survey, for example)
Coordinates with Campus Planning and Construction on issues related to environmental health and safety
Profile ofan Ideal Candidate
A Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary
A Doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education is strongly preferred
8+ years of directly comparable experience is necessary
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community is necessary
Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing research compliance is necessary
Knowledge of contracting process and associated local, state, federal, and other regulations is necessary
Knowledge of government and industry sponsored research and development programs is necessary
Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures is preferred
Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and/or projections is preferred
Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities is preferred
Skill in examining and reengineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures is preferred
Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart information to a diverse range of constituencies is preferred
Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals is preferred
Ability to supervise and train employees to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments is preferred
