Involves developing, implementing, and monitoring environmental and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, and ensure a safe workplace. May include industrial hygiene, ergonomics, occupational safety, environmental health, pest control, laboratory safety, hazardous materials control, hazardous waste management, emergency services and preparedness, fire safety, radiological safety, environmental protection including air,and soil quality, and other EH&S programs and policies; or provides technical support for these programs. Technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues / problems without precedent and / or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Serves as the campus Radiation Safety Officer/Laser Safety Officer and technical expert in ionizing and non-ionizing radiation safety. Problems are complex and may require creation of new methodologies by applying professional health physics knowledge and / or expertise. Implements and monitors campus ionizing radiation, non-ionizing radiation, and laser safety programs to help ensure a safe workplace and compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Decision-making is based on established procedures and integration / interpretation of relevant laws, regulations, and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant scientific methodology; impact on other EH&S and campus programs; and senior management approvals. Decisions may impact other EH&S programs or campus units. Represents the UCSC radiation safety program at local campus, UC systemwide, and professional organization meetings and conferences. Works directly with local and state regulatory agencies in matters related to radiation safety. The UCSC Environmental Health and Safety Department promotes employee and researcher occupational health and safety, while protecting our unique natural environment. In addition, we serve as the bridge between the campus community and EH&S regulatory agencies. This position requires passing a pre-employment criminal history background check. Selected candidates cannot begin work until passing their background check. Please note: Time required to complete this process may vary and can be lengthy. Some special conditions include: Eligible for California Department of Public Health Radiologic Health Branch approval as the RSO for the UCSC radiation safety program. Must possess a valid license to drive in the State of California and may participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program. Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus. Ability to wear a respirator in accordance with the California Code of Regulations Title 8, 5144.
