General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Mid-Level Photonics Engineer. This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:
Designs, develops, builds and tests systems and products based on optic, photonic and laser technologies
Interacts with device, hardware and software design teams to assist in overall development of optical systems; specifying, selecting and qualifying active and passive optical components, developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures and/or evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentation
Substantial contribution to electrical and optical requirements analysis, requirements definition, requirements management, functional analysis, performance analysis (e.g. optical loss, timing, power, etc.), design, integration, and verification of electrical and optical components, equipment and systems
Plans and leads root cause analysis for electrical and optical issues, conducts experimental tests, evaluates results to formulate and implement solutions to issues
Participates in design reviews of electrical and optical components, equipment and systems
Evaluates vendor capability to support product development
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Proficient use and understanding of electro-optical engineering concepts, principles, and theories
Proficient in the principles and techniques of Optical Engineering including optical telecommunications
Proficient understanding of optical engineering processes
Keeps abreast of technology trends
Proficient in optical engineering design tools
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
Familiarity with photonic and telecommunications test equipment
Ability to design photonic systems using primarily COTS equipment, and perform a link budget to ensure proper functionality
Knowledge of optical transport protocols is PREFERRED
PREFERRED DEGREE TYPES AND EXPERIENCE:
BS in Optical Engineering, Optical Sciences and Engineering, Physics, or Electrical Engineering from an accredited major university and fiveyears of relevant design experience
MS in Optical Engineering, Optical Sciences and Engineering, Physics, or Electrical Engineering from an accredited major university and three years of relevant design experience
BS and/or MS in other major engineering disciplines from accredited major universities with relevant work experience may also be considered
A current TS/SCI with Polygraph is required at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
